MBC Race Team rider Ron Knutkowski

Knutkowski, who has been on the podium for every WORS race he's entered this year, was only a minute back from the win. He was ninth overall in the Comp division, one of the fastest of the WORS categories.

The Red Eye Rendezvous in Wausau, Wisconsin, is the fourth of the WORS series races.

MBC riders are gearing up for the fifth race of the WORS series in Eau Claire and then the Subaru Cup at Cascade Mountain.

A Western-Michigan Bike Tour with Dan S.

Our IT guy at the shop, Dan Schneider, just returned from a four-day bike trip along the eastern coast of Lake Michigan in Michigan.

Dan, who has been riding, racing, and touring for more years than he can count, took the ferry to Muskegon with a few friends. The group pedaled over a variety of paved roads, gravel roads, and some unmarked forest roads.

On a bike tour, "I get to hang out with friends and go on a vacation that's all on bicycles rather than going somewhere and driving around," he said.

He took the ferry to Muskegon, then rode a loop from the ferry station to Grand Rapids, then Big Rapids, through the Manistee National Forest to Hart, then back to Muskegon.

"Touring is just relaxed," Schneider said. "No one wants to go really fast. We all just want to look at the scenery and have a beer at the end of the day."

Most of the route was planned on google maps, then Ride with GPS. They had hotels reserved along the way.

Dan rode his 2014 Specialized AWOL Comp bike. He loaded up all his gear in Axiom panniers (travel bags) attached to a Blackburn rack. Several times he used front-mounted Serfas lights, especially when the lights went out at one of his hotels!

He also had Specialized touring shoes and an Echelon helmet. His extra Bellwether shorts and jersey were stored in a Banjo Brothers frame pack. He was prepared for rainy conditions, but they had "really good weather."

All of these products are available at Ben's either online or in the store.

On Saturday, our web sales guy, Matt Hewitt, is leaving for a nine-day trip from Milwaukee around the northern tip of Lake Michigan, then back down along with eastern coast of the lake. He'll be camping along with way with friends. We'll be posting about his trip on a new bike when he returns.

Ben's Increases Size of Women's Prime at Downer Avenue Crit

Ben’s Cycle announced it is significantly increasing the size of the prime for the women’s race at the Downer Avenue Criterium June 28 in Milwaukee.

In previous years, Ben’s has given $1,000  to the pro women in a Ben’s Cycle Prime at the Downer Avenue race, part of the Tour of America’s Dairyland.
Vince Hanoski, owner of Ben’s Cycle in Milwaukee, said he wanted to grow his support of women’s cycling.
“We’re significantly increasing the size of the women’s prime this year,” he said. “The final amount will depend on the size of the women’s field and how much we raise at the Ben’s Super Prime party.”

Samantha Schneider (TIBCO) moves off the front.

A prime is a prize awarded to the winner of a particular lap in a criterium, a bicycle race of a specified number of laps on a closed course over public roads.  The Tour of America’s Dairyland is an 11-day series of races around southeastern Wisconsin.
Hanoski acknowledged that funding women’s fields on an equal basis on the men’s can be challenging. Bigger fields bring in bigger prizes, and small fields make it hard to justify more funding, he said.
“It’s a chicken and egg thing,” he said. “So we decided to increase the amount of our women’s prime to see if we can bring more women to the event. Women’s cycling is at a critical place in terms of support and ridership. We want to do what we can. ”
To locally increase that support, Ben’s also recently began sponsoring a women’s cycling club in Milwaukee known as the Bella Donnas.
“We want to see more women involved in cycling,” Hanoski said. “With our support, we hope to do a small part in growing women’s cycling.”

Ben’s will continue to fund the Super Prime for the men’s race.  Every year, the shop hosts the Downer Super Prime Party at the corner of Park and Hackett on Milwaukee’s East Side.  The money raised at the party funds the Super Primes.
The Super Primes are typically held sometime in the last 10 laps of the men’s and women’s race. This year the primes will be awarded at the Ben’s party site.

Tickets for the Super Prime party are $25 and include a t-shirt as well as all you can eat and drink. It is located at the corner of Park and Hackett in Milwaukee and begins around noon. You can buy wristbands at the party.
     See you there!

Are You Ready for the Super Prime Party???

Just six more days.

That's all you have to get ready for the IS Corp Downer Classic, or better known as the race for the Ben's Super Prime!

Ben's Cycle hosts a giant party Saturday, June 28 from roughly noon to around 9 p.m. at the corner of Hackett and Park Street on Milwaukee's East Side. It is one of the biggest cycling parties in the country.

And you are invited to join thousands of your closest new friends at the Downer race.

The pro women's race is at 5 p.m., the famous trike race with local bike shop owners, including our own Vince Hanoski, and other celebrities is around 6:30, and the pro men's race at 7.

For $25, you get a wristband that allows you to eat and drink your fill. And the $25 goes directly to funding the Ben's Super Prime for both the men's and women's pro races.

This year, Ben's has committed to significantly increasing the women's prime from $1,000 to as much as we can raise from the party.

The wristbands are available at the party at any time.

In a criterium bike race, which goes around a closed course on city streets, racers who win certain laps are awarded prizes, often cash from sponsors. At the Downer race, the Ben's Super Prime is awarded on a secret lap. Only Vince and Brett know the lap number. And as previous winners have said, the size of the prime changes the race tactics.

So come join the fun and support pro men's and women's cycling at its best. Saturday, June 28, from around noon to around nine p.m. Racing starts with junior events at 10 a.m.

Thinking of Cyclocross: A Review of the Specialized Crux

Cyclocross Magazine reviewed the Specialized Pro Race Crux in a recent issue, and we're reposting it here.

While the reviewed bike is the super duper high-end cross race bike, Specialized also has the same frame with different levels of components at a lower cost.

This is the frame I rode last year, and until we get the Milwaukee Bicycle Company Mettle, is by far the best cross race bike I've been on. I've ridden a variety of other brands, and the carbon Crux is the lightest, stiffest, and most responsive bike.

I built it up with SRAM Force components, Avid BB7 brakes, and a Giro cockpit. I had zero issues with the bike during the season, including the disc brakes.

It rides long, in that it carves through corners rather than twitches through them. When you come into a corner, the frame is so stiff, you rocket out of the corner as soon as you stand on the pedals.

The front end is stiff, yet compliant in rough conditions. I felt completely secure in navigating steep, rutted, technical downhill sections. The bike felt perfectly balanced.

I'm keeping the Crux as my road bike. The Mettle is going to be the race bike of the future, and I can't wait to ride steel again.

For those of you who need carbon for cross, the Crux is really the only bike you need to try.

Come toBen's to try out our line of Milwaukee Bicycle Company, Specialized, and Focus cyclocross bikes as well as tires and all the other gear you'll need for your cross season. It's never too early to get ready for cyclocross!

Last year our owner Vince Hanoski crushed everyone at the Downer Classic Trike race, then "allowed" someone else to win.

This year, we made sure to invite a famous celebrity who will likely turn the tables on Vince.

We won't reveal the celebrity's name, but will give you clues all week. The first person to correctly identify the celebrity on our Facebook page will win a free wristband to the party!

The trike races begins around 6:30 at the ISCorp Downer Classic. The women's race begins at 5, and the men's race begins at 7. Yes, that's right. Either 100 kilometers or 100 miles of hilly, twisty single track and fire roads.

Ron Knutkowski finished ninth overall in the 100k in 5:39 (more than five hours!)

Victoria Pink knocked two hours off her time last year in finishing in 8:30.

Joe Stephens finished the 100-mile event in 9:30, and Rick Walls finished in 9:46,  two hours faster than last year as well.

Schneider leads Erica Allar (Colavita-Fine Cooking) by just two points in the Tour of America's Dairyland Pro Women series. Allar finished third, while Tina Pic (Fearless Femme), who sits in third overall five points behind Schneider, won the sprint finish.

Schneider, Allar, and Pic have all finished in the top five each day of the ToAD series.

Skylar Scheider
Schneider's 15-year-old phenom sister Skylar (TIBCO) is leading the category 2 series competition and sits in sixth overall in the pro women's series.

Here is Active Pursuit's Tom Held on the racing. The Wisconsin Bike Fed also did a nice article on the Schneiders and 19-year-old Nathan Labecki.

Nathan Labecki pulls on Best Amateur jersey.
In the Pro Men's race at Beloit, Justin Williams (Astellas) won the race, while Daniel Holloway (Athlete Octane, finished second and held onto his healthy overall series lead.

After racing in the category 2/3 division, Milwaukee rider Labecki (ISCorp) raced in the pro division, earning him top honors in the category 2 series while taking an impressive 16th in the pro race.

Al Krueger (KS Energy/ Team Wisconsin) won the 2/3 event.

In the masters 1/2 race, Velocause rider Brian Leatherman took third, winning the field sprint. Andy Feuersthaler (Velocause) finished 11th and held onto fifth overall, while Leatherman moved up to 11th. Michael Froh of Velocause continued his consistent placings and moved into fifth overall in the category 1/2 45 plus division.

The Velocause category 3/4 masters had a more difficult day, with Jeffrey Elam getting 11th. Benny Smith is 8th in the overall.

The Ben's Super Prime Party will be Saturday, June 28 from noon-ish to 9-ish at the Downer Cycling Classic. A $25 wristband will get you food and drink for the evening plus the new t-shirt.

While the pro cycling events for the Tour of America's Dairyland take center stage, it's really the Race of the Tricycles that will capture the hearts and minds of the thousands of spectators around the course.

This year, Ben's owner Vince Hanoski has invited a very special guest, a celebrity who might just crush Vince in the race.
This made in Milwaukee trike will be ridden by our special guest!

This celebrity will be racing this specially-made Mad Max tricycle, fabricated right here in Milwaukee.

Yesterday, we gave out our first clue as to the identity of the special celebrity. Today we give out the second clue. The first person to identify the celebrity on our Facebook page wins a free wristband for the party!

Schneider Narrowly Keeps Jersey at Schlitz Park Criterium

$

The Tour of America's Dairyland visited arguably the most challenging course of the series: the Schlitz Park Criterium. Racers climb a long, steep hill up Second Avenue, then a winding downhill.

A three-woman break got up the road and New Zealand rider Joanne Kiesanowski (TIBCO) took the win. Sam Schneider, also of TIBCO, took fifth and maintained a narrow one-point lead over Erica Allar (Colavita-Fine Cooking)

Schneider's 15-year-old sister Skylar (TIBCO) finished back in the field and lost her Cat. 2 series leader's jersey. Skylar is limited to "junior gearing" because of her age, which means she doesn't have the big gears needed to ride fast down hill.

As a testament to her positive personality, Skylar awarded the Oarsmn Capital Top Amateur Jersey to Laura Jorgenson (Mellow Mushroom). Skylar is now just two points behind Jorgensen.

Here is Tom Held's report in the Journal Sentinel.

Nathan Labecki (ISCorp-Intelligentsia Coffee) finished again as the top amateur in the Pro Men's field to maintain his lead in the Cat. 2 Oarsman Capital series.

Wisconsin natives Jordan Cullen (Hagens Berman Development Team), James Stemper (Kenda 5-Hour Energy) and Cole House (Intelligentsia Coffee) finished second, third, and sixth in the pro men's race respectively.

For Team Velocause, Benny Smith had a great result in finishing third in the Masters 3/4 race. Ross Giese also finished 13th. Smith is now fifth in the 35 plus overall series, while Giese is sixth in the 45 plus overall.

Brian Leatherman, Michael Froh, and Chris Zugel finished the Masters 1/2 race. Andy Feuersthaler, who took the night off, is still in seventh overall in the 35 plus series, while Leatherman moved up to ninth. Froh is now fourth in the 45 plus series.

Downer Avenue Trike Race Mystery Clue #3

On Saturday, June 28, Ben's is hosting the Super Prime part at the Downer Avenue Criterium, part of the Tour of America's Dairyland.

The Super Prime party funds the men's and women's pro race primes that total several thousand dollars. A prime is awarded to one rider who wins one particular lap of the criterium.

The party runs from noon-ish to nine-ish in the evening. You buy a wristband from us for $25 and get all the food and drink you need plus an awesome t-shirt.

The pro women's race starts at 5, and the pro men start at 7.

In between is the (in)famous tricycle race between area bicycle shop owners. Our owner, Vince Hanoski, was able to ride away from the field last year. But this year, Vince has invited a special guest celebrity to ride. And this celebrity is likely to crush Vince in the race!

We are awarding one wristband to the first person who correctly identifies the mystery guest on our Facebook page. Those of you who work for the shop or whom Vince has already told are NOT eligible, you goofballs.

Clue #1 What is Vince's favorite sport?
Clue #2 Aye, Aye Captain.
Clue #3 The mystery celebrity gets a little defensive.

Teresa Keeps Making Progress Toward First Triathlon

$

A couple of weeks ago, Teresa came into Ben's needing to rent a bike to prepare for her first triathlon. We asked her to keep us up to date since she was not an experience cyclist, and her story might inspire others to start riding more. We're thrilled she's making so much progress!

Here is her originalstory.

Here is what she wrote on June 19:
"My training is going well. I've started swimming every day during my lunch hour and I run about 3x a week after work. On the weekends I have been taking 10-ish mile bike rides on the Oak Leaf trail.

I was very surprised at how slow I am on the bike. It's going to take me forever to finish the bike portion if I don't speed up. I plan to go to Pewaukee this weekend and ride the 17-mile bike trail to get a feel for the hills and see how long it takes me now. I also am starting to do brick workouts, which are combining two events in one workout to practice adapting muscle groups. Swim to bike is fine, bike to run is difficult."

Here is her report from Monday:
"The Pewaukee Lake Triathlon has a mandatory swim clinic for all first-time triathletes. I attended a session today which was great. I have been swimming a lot in the pool at my gym, but being in the open water with other swimmers was way different! It was great to experience that and I feel a lot more prepared. Besides the swim, the instructors gave us newbies tips on how to effectively swim with others (e.g. if we're slow, keep left and take wide turns to lessen the chance of getting swam over). The instructor also answered all our newbie questions about the triathlon day. I've been having nightmares about not being able to find my stuff in the transition area and she calmed my fears.

I also had a great weekend ride on Saturday. I went to Fond du Lac to ride with a friend of mine. I thought I was really slow, but it turns out I just needed my seat moved up and a little more air in my tires!  I averaged around 14mph rather than 10 mph which I'm happy about. Having a speedy cycling buddy to lead me probably helped too! I also downloaded Strava which is a really cool way to track my rides and compare myself to other riders. Overall I'm really excited about my cycling progress.

After my ride last weekend, and the swim clinic tonight, I feel pretty good about those two disciplines. Running is still my least favorite, but I'll be focusing more on that the week before the triathlon because I'll be away from my bike and pool while I am in Colorado."
